Nick Connors Book Chat One part 2
Unforuantly for me I was not present for the first book chat but was fortunate enough to get a photocopy of the discussion. Jordan said that they challenge Jeannette, but I would have to disagree because I more think they are neglectful. The don’t really push Jeannette to do anything, the only way they do is the poor girl wouldn’t be able to survive without learning how to do certain things. A good question Austin brought up was why would they need gold if their happy? I think its not only to give their kids something to look forward too but is like the dragon in Grendal, you have to find what makes you happy and chase after it until you seize it up. A good skeptical question was if the crib death was a lie which could explain the fathers mental instability. Personally I think it was a crib death, they maybe neglectful but not murders I know for a fact the father loves his children. I think him losing his child is what drove him to become an alcoholic, because before he used to work for the military and seemed to have his life in a little bit better order. The mother is the one who confuses me the most out of all the characters in this morbid story. She has a rich mom so essiantly she could have whatever she wanted. Instead she living a nomadic life that seems miserable. Also she as total disregard for her children, she hardly cared her daughter caught on fire at the age of three.

Nick Connors Book Chat 2 part 3
The End of the book was very shocking to me to say the least. Like when her dad had a heart attack and they decieded to unhook the machines is just terribly sad. When we were discussing the book we concluded that resillance is the theme of the book. I couldn’t agree more, from living in absolute disgusting home were DCF almost got called to, and having Brian getting molested by Rexs mother the always seem to find another happy point in their life. I thought it was obscured that Jeannette got whipped for telling her mom that she cant talk like a mom if she doesn’t act like one. Which is true their very childish and selfish and to be a good parent you have to be selfless. Lauree surprisingly didn’t continue school after she dropped out junior year and moved away. Instead she decieded to go on her mothers path with an art carrerr. Eventually Jeannette and Brian get out of that dysfunctional home which is obviously a good thing. But Maureen turned out the worst probably because she didn’t have her sibling to teach her and didn’t learn independence. And its obvious that you cant depend on their parents so Maureen had it the worst out of the children. The father always seemed to care a lot about his kids, just his values were all skewed. He gave Jeannette a knife to protect herself when she moved to new york which was showing he cares about her safety. But hes not afraid to use his kids to make money like when he made Jeannette dance with old men when she was only I believe ten. The mother is ignorant and hateful like usual and in my opinon a way worse person than their father. She wasn’t sad about her children moving out she was jelauos of the fact that they went to New York. In the end it’s a crazy messed up home and no matter how rotten the parents are they do love their kids they just couldn’t function in our society.
Part 4
If I could change anything for my next book chat it would be me having more time to say my thoughts. Sometimes people went on tagents and I would forget my train of thought because they were continusly talking but they made me look at the parents as insane as they really are because after reading it for a while it almost seems normal. But ofcourse I was more than willing to share my ideas when I had the chance too because I enjoy discussing what makes a dysfunctional family. I would normally try to challenge my other group members ideas for an example, everyone was saying that they were unloving parents because they were crazy and bad at being parents. But they were not unloving they cared about their children exspecially the father they just didn’t really know how to raise kids. Personally I like discussing topics but I would suggest a hand raising system. There seemed to be little order of who would speak next and it was very difficult to take notes on the discussion. Personally id rather fill out questioners because it kinda seemed all over the place and a few times the group got off topic.
